Principles of Operation

It's an economical three-piece assembly that protects the cartridge from water spray and gross ACM (Asbestos Containing Material). Particulate mater that does reach the pre-filter is trapped before reaching the main cartridge filter. When "loaded" with particulates, the entire Prefilter/Cover Assembly can be discarded and replaced. Or, for maximum savings, discard and replace only the inexpensive prefilter.

Approvals and Standards

The OptimFilter XL Prefilter/Cover, along with the OptimAir MM PAPR has NIOSH/MSHA approval.

Flow Tester - The Flow tester is a thin plate orifice meter for testing the volumetric flow rate delivered by an MSA OptimAir PAPR. Field Test Unit - Quickly evaluates the electrical components of an OptimAir 6 or 6A PAPR. Protective Cover - Protects PAPR from water (such as asbestos decontamination showers) or particulate contamination. Flow Check Devices - Allow users of PAPRs to quickly and conveniently verify that their unit is providing the required air flow.

Principles of Operation

The OptimAir 6A powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) provides respiratory protection by filtering contaminants from ambient air and providing air flow to either a facepiece or hood (with HEPA filters only) at a rate equal to or exceeding National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) standards.

Approvals and Standards

The OptimAir 6A powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) with Ultravue, Comfo, Comfo Elite, or Comfo Welder's facepieces or Tyvek hood has approvals from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Filters and cartridges are covered by separate approval. Cartridges must be replaced whenever air flow drops below four cubic feet per minute (115 lpm) with tight-fitting facepieces, six cubic feet per minute (170 lpm) with the Tyvek hood or when the user smells or tastes the contaminant.

The OptimAir 6A powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) can be used with an entire family of filters, chemical cartridges and combination cartridges for protection against particulates, toxic gases and vapors or a combination of these hazards. Requiring two filters, the unit is available with full- or half-mask facepiece, or hood. The belt-mounted motor/blower assembly includes an efficient 4.6 volt motor which has a long service life. The motor/blower assembly features threaded connectors for quick and easy attachment of OptiFilter cartridges.

Specifically designed to protect health care professionals from residual chemical/biological/radiological agents when they are performing first responder duties during homeland security or terrorist situations. Weighing less than six pounds, the system features a lightweight, chemical-resistant Tychem SL hood and belt-mounted blower with two HC CBA/RCA canisters. The canisters contain a pleated high-efficiency (P-100) filter to remove aerosols, radionuclides, and solid particulates, as well as an impregnated, activated carbon bed to adsorb (filter out) gases and vapors. The carbon bed is the same as used in military canisters and is effective against mustard (HD), Sarin (GB), DMMP (a Sarin simulant), HCN and CK. Approved for High Efficiency, Chlorine, Sulfur Dioxide, Hydrogen Chloride, Hydrogen Fluoride and Hydrogen Sulfide (escape only).

The hood, which weighs approximately eight ounces, has a fully adjustable suspension and soft fabric collar for extended-wear comfort. Positive pressure inside the hood keeps contaminants out and eliminates the need for fit testing, so the comfortable, easy-to-don hood can be worn over eyeglasses, long hair and beards. Front and rear bibs provide neck-opening protection without restricting arm movement. A wraparound lens helps to minimize claustrophobia and provides excellent visibility. For efficient training and savings on batteries, a rechargeable NiCd battery can be substituted for the lithium battery, which provides a 10-year shelf life and four hours of wear time.

Principles of Operation

The respirator filters particulates and provides a constant flow of respirable air directly to the Advantage 3000 Ultravue® or Ultra Elite® facepiece. Because it does not have a breathing tube, the unit is more compact than other powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs), enhancing user maneuverability and simplifying decontamination.

Product Information

Well suited for abatement, nuclear, and other industries with hazardous particulate environments. The water-resistant filter has an optional prefilter and cover. Complete units include motor/blower, nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery, dual-rate charger, one Type HE OptiFilter XL cartridge, belt and choice of Ultravue, Ultra Elite facepiece or Advantage 3000. The low-profile NiMH battery pack is lightweight (12.5 oz.), fits close to the body, and is small enough to fit in most pockets. The battery provides eight hours of continuous use, lasting a full work shift. NiMH batteries do not have a "memory effect" like NiCd batteries. The sealed, water-resistant battery pack is designed for easy shower decontamination. The dual-rate smart charger is a standard accessory with this unit. The charger can recharge a battery in less than three hours. An LED indicates battery condition.
